Becoming an Innovation Champion, are you up for it?

We all talk (and read) a lot about how big businesses lead the way in transforming the industry with great new initiatives, now smaller firms are being encouraged (by a big business and big university) to lead the way to help tackle productivity challenges in the construction industry and inspire others to do the same. Included are: productivity, profits, relationships and projects.

The Innovation Driven Procurement (IDP) is the brainchild of Nottingham Trent University and Morgan Sindall Construction, supported by Construction Coach with funding from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). It’s a fully funded programme for SME and Micro-business owners in the construction supply chain.

IDP aims to create 40 Innovation Champions to identify and solve problems within their business relating to productivity with the core objective of inspiring others to do the same. Applications are open to all UK contractor’s supply chain and limited places are now available for one-to-one coaching and mentoring to identify an innovation project and ultimately becoming an Innovation Champion.

Maria Coulter, founder of Construction Coach, said: “Our cohort of 40 Innovation Champions will gain access to free skills and resources which will not only benefit their businesses but help to inspire others within construction. It’s a challenging time for the industry so we strongly encourage as many people as possible to invest time with the programme.”

One example of how the programme is impacting demonstrates how subcontractors were able to achieve shorter delivery times and minimise risks on site after engaging with training and implementing innovation and early engagement.

The IDP is also launching an app this month for site workers to be able to access the CPD modules whilst ‘on the go’.
